Elements that make up a good cocktail

Each cocktail is made up of the union of various ingredients. Each element has its own flavor. But with the mix, they take on their own character. That is why it is important that the flavor of an ingredient does not stand out over the rest of the elements. The objective is to achieve a perfectly balanced combination with an absolutely new flavor.

A cocktail can be divided into four parts:

The base of the cocktail

It is the ingredient that contributes the qualities of aroma, flavor and color of the combination and on which it is built in combination. Usually it is a distillate: vodka, gin, whiskey, rum, tequila, brandy or calvados. Although cava can also be used (although due to its foamy character it can also be considered as a body).

In short drinks its proportion ranges between 50 and 70% (although it can reach 90% as in the case of the Extra-Dry Martini). In long drinks it usually does not occupy more than 20 or 30%.

The body

It is the ingredient or group of ingredients that acts on the texture of the combination, complementing the base and providing certain aromas. The body is usually liquid but it can also be another more or less dense substance. It can be a wine or a sparkling wine, a flavored wine like vermouth or a fortified wine like port. They can also be mineral waters (with or without gas) or flavored soft drinks, colas, tonics, ginger ales, ginger beer, fruit juices or vegetable juices.

The body of the cocktail can also be fatty material like milk, cream or even the white or the yolk of the egg.

The aromatic additive

It is the element that will give the combination its bitter or sweet flavor and, sometimes, its color. Bitters such as Campari, concentrated bitters such as angostura or some syrups and liqueurs such as grenadine are common.

The decoration of the combined

The presentation of a cocktail is decisive and of great importance. Its appearance always affects the desire for consumption. And, in short, we always consume what is not visually appealing.

Finally, add that not all combinations have these four parts. We can find combinations without body or without base, even without alcohol. This article only refers to the general method of making a drink with all its parts.

And, if what you want is to taste the best signature cocktails in Malaga, remember that you will find them in the Matiz Restaurant, one of the best cocktail bars in Malaga.
